Age of the Rudey Nudie
July 2nd 2008 08:27
From the moment he became mobile, getting Isaac dressed has provided my daily exercise. Wrestling him into pajamas is akin to a 30 minute pump class, I have rock hard biceps from the nappy change pin-down and the morning ritual of singlet, shirt, pants, socks, shoes, works off my breakfast, and then some.
What is it about little boys and being nude? He’s always loved running around in the nuddy. He loves his traditional pre-bath “nudie run” down the hallway and we all think it’s great for him to get a bit of sun on his bum in the backyard.
Recently though, the no-clothes trend is getting out of hand. Ike is learning to undress himself – which apparently is a milestone to be proud of. Except that it’s the middle of winter and we have just started “introduction to toilet training”.
His newest trick is to rip off his nappy and watch with fascination as he piddles on the (luckily tiled) floor. Usually this intriguing event is accompanied by an exclamation of “oh oh”, “oh dear” and “doodle”. Yeah, it makes us proud!!
So for now being nude is in. I’m looking forward to the next stage when he is interested in putting his clothes ON.
There have been a few indications that this next milestone is around the corner. He has taken a shine to a silver purse and string of fake pearls I recently wore to an ‘80’s party. Strutting around the house with the necklace and bag draped fashionably around his shoulders, he has been nicknamed “Sparkles” and may well have a catwalk career ahead of him.
He enjoys playing dress up with tea towels, pretending they are red checked skirts and scarfs. He also has a major obsession with other people’s shoes. But that’s another story.
I’ve been told that the fun really begins when toddlers have “favourite” clothes. My best friend has four boys, two of whom have been through wardrobe obsessions. Young Sam wore his Bob the Builder undies every single day for weeks, his mum having to remove them at night (via bribery) to get them into the wash. His brother Sean fell in love with a Spiderman costume and insisted on wearing it to bed, to the shops, to kindy etc. etc. Frustrating for mum perhaps, but gorgeous to see the kids express themselves through what they wear.
As for Isaac, the only clothing items he is keen to put on at the moment are several nappies. All at the same time. Over his clothes. Either that or stay nude.
Bring on the age of the fashionista!!
