Drinking habits affect kids from age 2

A new alcohol campaign by Drinkwise Australia warns that children as young as TWO pick up alcohol consumption habits from their parents that will shape their drinking patterns as adults.
Child psychologist John Irvine says that from two children begin to mimic their parents activities, be it mopping the floor or holding a drink.
Great! Another thing to feel guilty about. Will my nightly glass of vino turn Isaac into an out of control binge drinking teen? Will his dad’s obsession with home brew create a future beer hound?
Actually if I think about it, I don’t drink so much since joining the mum club. These days after two glasses of wine I’m half pissed, after three I’m quite smashed and more than that gives me a hangover that’s just not worth it. We’re certainly not the party animals we were pre parenthood.
Does two year old Ike care or even notice how much we drink? He certainly mimics other parental quirks. Recently he’s learned to make himself burp and does so frequently, especially while out and about. He also dissolves into fits of giggles at the sound of a fart – his own or someone else’s. I squarely blame his father for these charming new developments.
Like many kids I know, he gravitated toward an open beer bottle as a baby, but I think the attraction was cold glass rubbing on his sore gums, not necessarily the beer inside.
For now I think I’ll concern myself with Isaac’s social skills and I’ll worry about his drinking habits when he’s old enough to start sneaking beer out of the fridge.
And no, I won’t feel guilty about the glass of wine I enjoy of an evening. Most days I’ve definitely earned it!
