The Housework Fairy

September 7th 2008 12:27
Isaac’s future wife is going to love her mother-in-law (that would be me…) Though he shares genes with an “allergic to housework” father, he is fast becoming a housework fairy, that fabled being every woman wants.

He’s been fabulous at making a mess since the day he was born, and the daily storm that is “Hurricane Ike” wreaks havoc on our house every day. Recently though, he’s taken an interest in helping Mummy clean – and it’s a trait I’m nurturing with all my might. I have a (probably delusional) hope that it will continue into his teenage years and beyond. Perhaps I’m raising a domestic God?!

Of course when I say “helping Mummy” I’m talking about helping in ways only a two year old housework fairy can. What he lacks in cleaning success he makes up for with enthusiasm, persistence and pure entertainment value.

The other day I was hanging out the washing and was baffled by a smattering of orange flecks all over our clothes. I’ve washed plenty of tissues in my time but what the hell leaves waxy orange bits on your nice clean socks?
When I noticed the fresh citrus aroma I put two and two together and it became apparent that our housework fairy had put a MANDARIN in with the load. Yep, a mandarin. I’m not sure how he got the mandarin, or how he helpfully put it in the washing machine without me noticing. The ways of the housework fairy can be mysterious at times…

Washing up is an extremely fun chore for the housework fairy. As he helpfully throws items from the draining tray back into the sink I take comfort in the fact that I’m not only washing the dishes, but the floor, cupboards, myself and Isaac as well. One day he’ll learn that the tea towel is for drying things other than the floor, cupboards, myself and Isaac – THAT will be a milestone to be proud of.

His future wife will love that he dislikes dirty surfaces and knows what to do about them. Why only last week he helpfully dealt with a spill on the couch by emptying a whole pack of Huggies baby wipes and mashing them into the seat cushions. If there’s one thing you want in a housework fairy its thoroughness.

Best of all he’s currently enthusiastic about putting toys away (thanks girls at daycare!). Books go back on the shelf, Play Doh back in the container and giant lego back in its wagon. The downside is that some toys, and also essential items such as keys, TV remotes and packets of teabags, get “put away”, never to be found again. He’s repeatedly misplaced his Thomas the Tank Engine characters and they’ve shown up in such places as the bath, my underpants drawer, behind the change table and in a pair of shoes at Nanny and Poppy’s place. We still don’t know where James the “Red Toot Toot” is.

We’ll probably find him when we find the rest of the mystery mandarins.

All hail the housework fairy!! If it doesn’t kill me he’ll make a wonderful husband one day. xxx
