The Party Planner
June 16th 2008 03:51
Yesterday I went to a kids birthday party. I spent most of the afternoon chasing my sugar-laden little man as he stuffed himself with cake, ran around and around in circles, fell into the garden repeatedly and eventually turned feral and started snatching the birthday girl's new toys.
At home time, with the patio covered in pink cake frosting and crushed chips, tears from more than a few (also feral) kids due to over-tiredness and an unfortunate billycart crashing incident, the hosts swore that next year they'd hire a room at a play centre or go to Maccas for cheeseburgers and ice cream cake.
An eye opening experience for me, or at least you'd think..
Ike turns two in a couple of weeks, and I am in full scale party planning mode. I know full well that I am destined to end the day in a similar fashion to the tears and mess of yesterday, but I'm still enthused about Ike's "Wild Wild West" birthday extravaganza.
Call me nuts but I am really excited about cowboy outfits, cowboy food and cowboy decorations. Renowned for my crap baking skills, I am attempting a star shaped birthday cake, which I hope will be more recognisable than last year's dinosaur/dragon/glob of green goo cake.
I'm going to make paper mache for the first time since primary school with grand plans for a horse shaped piniata. I've even recruited hubby to find some hay bales for seats and had him put on a special home brew in honor of the occasion.
All this for a two year old's birthday party! Will Ike even remember it? Hmmm...probably not.
I guess if I'm honest I have to admit that I'm really doing this for ME!! I want the gorgeous photos of my little man dressed as a cowboy. I want the satisfaction of cooking a western feast for my beloved family and friends. I want to spend some time planning something creative and fun.
Can the birthday party be a guilt-free way to brighten up the sometimes monotonous life of this stay at home mum?
It will be interesting to see if Ike has his third birthday at McDonalds...
