Yoga to Go
June 22nd 2008 04:10
Isaac’s Uncle Matt has coined a new phrase in our household. Last night, over a few beers, a hilarious discussion took place about the concept of “poo yoga”.
While childless himself, Matty has observed many of his friend’s kids, including my Ike, in the process of adopting yoga-like poses to…erm…assist with elimination. If you’ve ever seen a little person stretching, straining, grimacing and grunting you have to agree it is an entertaining occurrence!
Mid-discussion, as if on cue, Ike assumed a crouching position we named “The Downward Bog” and proceeded to fill his pants.
This prompted a brainstorming session that created a whole series of “Poo Yoga” poses with names such as “Salutation to the Bum” and “The Nappy Warrior”. Yes, it’s a little concerning that this is how we amuse ourselves on a Saturday night now that we have kids.
Anyway, as far as the “yoga to go” reference is concerned, Uncle Matty is actually onto something. Further investigation reveals that there ARE actually certain yoga poses that can, ahem, get you going.
This is an insight that could be invaluable to new mums, not just our little gurus in training. Many women suffer from constipation whilst pregnant and it can persist after birth. I’ve done a little investigating, and here are three poses that specifically target the abdominal region of the body and may help to relieve constipation. Try them if you dare…
1. Kneel on all fours with your head, neck and spine parallel to the floor. Tuck your chin into your chest and stretch your back upwards like a cat. This will stretch your abdominal organs nicely.
2. From this first pose, take your butt back onto your heels and keep your hands stretched out in front. Hold it for 10 seconds or so to strengthen and cleanse your stomach.
3. Then sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you, feet hip width apart. Raise your arms above your head, stretching out your stomach and spine. This pose is said to help cleanse your digestive system and also calm your nervous system. Two birds with one stone. Fantastic!
I’m no expert but I have done a few courses in my time and will thoroughly recommend yoga as a way to relax, strengthen and de-stress. And given it seems to work for my little man, I’ll definitely be adopting a yoga regimen if I find myself with “digestive issues” at any stage.
Perhaps I’ll get Uncle Matty to show me the ropes.
